Use this session plan over the course of three weeks. In Week 1, you’ll read the first chapter, ‘Seas of Grass.’ Then, read the five smart words and definitions from Chapter 1. Have the student journal about why grasslands are important. In Week 2, read chapter 2, ‘From Savanna to Prairie.’ See if your student can match smart words and definition cards from Chapter 1. Use the Venn diagram to compare temperate and tropical grasslands. In Week 3, read the third chapter, ‘Alive in the Grass.’ Encourage your student to correctly match all ten smart word cards and definitions from the first two chapters. Allow your student to draw animals found in the African savanna.
