The tutor can start the session by asking the student if they’ve ever lived in, or visited, a country where they speak a different language. The student might discuss a time they’ve felt like the “new kid.” The tutor can also help their students understand the meaning of metaphors and similes throughout the book. The session plan offers a journal prompt for the student – “It feels like home when _____.” Or as an alternative journaling exercise, the students could make a list of all the Spanish words from the book and try to guess the meaning based on clues from the author.
