Welcome to the weekly Tutor Tuesday blog!
Thank you for reading and responding to our first edition last week. It was wonderful to hear from you. Today we focus the blog on working with sight words.
Literacy Learning
Sight words, often also called high frequency sight words, are commonly used words children are encouraged to memorize as a whole by sight, so that they can automatically recognize these words in print without having to use any strategies to decode. Knowing sight words boosts confidence in the emerging reader and promotes reading comprehension.
Watch the video below for a lesson on sight words with Lori Deubner, Oasis RSVP Coordinator and Reading Specialist.
Downloadable Activities
Below are three links for materials that you can use with your students. The Dolch Sight Words list is the most commonly used set of sight words and are grouped by grade level. Authors have provided permission for your use only.
Facilitator Shout Out
Oasis School District Facilitators are important partners in the Oasis Tutoring Program. Each week we will highlight one of them.
Kim Sult, Instructional Coordinator for Northwest R-1 School District has been an Oasis Facilitator for three years. One of Kim’s favorite attributes of the Oasis Tutoring program is the relationships that tutors develop with students. Kim says,
“Sharing the necessary skills to become a good reader is important for our students, but being exposed to good literature and a love of reading is also so important.”
We asked Kim what she misses most during the current break from school and she told us she misses her coworkers, seeing and chatting with students and Northwest Oasis tutors in the school buildings. The Northwest School district is connecting with students through telephone calls and Google Meet to continue learning.
Kim had this special message for Northwest tutors during the break,
“Please know that you are missed by your students! I have heard on many occasions how much they look forward to seeing you each week! While they are at home and get to spend some much needed quality time with their families, they are also missing those from school that truly love and care about them. They not only need the routine that school provides, they miss that someone is coming just for them, to spend time with just them and show them how much they are cared for. You make a difference in their lives!”

Thank you! I don’t have a home computer, but do have internet on my phone. Could you post the Dolch word list you mentioned on this site? Thanks!
Kerry, thank you for viewing the blog. When on your phone, scroll down to the section heading “Downloadable Resources”. The link to the resources Lori mentions in the video are listed including the Dolch words.
Loved the sight word activities that Lori presented…very helpful….appreciate the effort to keep the brain active especially when there is time to spare creating these projects for future use with stufents!
Thank you Martha
So far I am enjoying these Tutor Tuesdays. Thanks for the different game ideas. My experience has proven to be very rewarding when the student is enjoying their time with us. I always do games where they are not only having fun, but they are also learning without knowing it. This is a rewarding program for me to be a part of.
Sharon – we are so glad you are enjoying Tutor Tuesdays. I agree, it is important to make learning fun.
So many ideas. Loved today’s lesson.
Linda Austin
Thank you Linda
Some fun activities. Really liked the sight word painting. It would be great if you can keep sending downloadable files. I have set up a follder on my PC to save them to so I don’t forget for next year.
Hi Karla. Great idea to save the activities as a resource for future tutoring.
This was tremendous. Thank you
Hi Sandra, thank you for taking the time to view this week’s edition of Tutor Tuesday.
The link didn’t work. I copied and pasted it instead. Fun activities. I liked the crayon one! (Nice kitchen, Lori!)
Mary Ann, thank you for your persistence.
I loved today’s lesson! Tutor Tuesday is an excellent idea; thank you~ And I love that we can save these emails for future reference. Another game that I play with sight words is GO FISH. I use index cards and make two cards for each sight word and then play the Go Fish Game! I also play “Concentration” where they have to find the pairs~ So much fun. Thank you for the additional ideas. I need them!!!!
Renee – thank you the game suggestions. Students really enjoy Go Fish and Concentration.
Thanks so much for providing Tutor Tuesdays. The parent of my student asked to meet on Skype or Zoom. We did today for about 40 minutes. Is that okay? The student read from a book on the Epic website. Have you heard of this website? If tutors use the site should they sign up as educators or family. Thanks for your help.
Melanie – thanks for sharing the information and your experience with the Epic website. There are so many wonderful educational resources to keep us all learning while we are at home.
Thank you Lori! I appreciate receiving the sight word activities.
Excellent presentation!
Cheryl – thank you for taking the time to view this week’s edition of Tutor Tuesday.
GREAT ideas for sight words. Thanks you so very much
Chris – we are so happy you enjoyed reading the ideas.
I had to make this a Tutor Wednesday instead, but Lori’s sight word activities were great. Rolling dice with sight words on them will be fun for my students, who are both energetic boys. Thanks, Lori — that helped!
Excellent presentation learned some ideas for sight words and a wonderful use for my ancient scrabble game! Thanks
Thank you to Mary and her team for creating this for our tutors. Much needed at this time.
