Using the included pictures of the Caldecott and Newberry medals, explain to your student that the American Library Association award these to the most distinguished books each year. After reading the book together, discuss that some people felt the book did not deserve the awards. Discuss fact versus opinion utilizing the Market Street Fact and Opinion Mat. Use the Opinion Writing Graphic Organizer best suited to your student and have them write about which book they would select to receive an award and why.
