National Impact – 36 Years & Counting!
Founded in St. Louis, Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring has grown into a national model for intergenerational connection and is now one of the largest programs of its kind. Since 1989, the program has impacted the lives of more than 525,000 children—and continues to expand its reach each year. Our tutoring program is now offered in 22 cities across 15 different states, and is supported by more than 3,000 tutors. Additionally, 93% of students participating in Oasis tutoring sessions showed an improvement in their reading scores.

Once you’ve selected a location which fits your needs, you may reach out directly to the representative listed under the location or fill out the contact form on this page. A member of our team will walk you through next steps, including needed training.
Once your training is complete, you’ll be paired with a student you’ll meet with weekly during the school year. Don’t worry—your student and their teacher understand that life happens, and occasional absences for vacations, illness, or unexpected events are perfectly okay.
The Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring program currently partners with more than 600 schools nationwide and is always seeking opportunities to expand our partnerships. To learn more about becoming a partner district, contact Stephanie McCreary, Chief Purpose Officer at [email protected].

The program serves children in kindergarten through third grade, a critical period for building reading and language skills.
No prior tutoring or teaching experience is required. What’s most important is your enthusiasm, patience, and compassion. In this role, you’ll support a child not just as a tutor, but also as a mentor, friend, and role model.
Tutors complete 10–12 hours of training based on a proven six-part framework that includes talking, reading, and writing activities. You’ll learn strategies to draw out a child’s experiences and help them create simple stories that become the foundation for reading practice. You may also participate in monthly tutor meetings for ongoing training and for sharing successes and challenges with fellow tutors.
You can select a participating school that best fits your preference. Your Oasis facilitator in the district will help you schedule a weekly tutoring time that works during the school day.
