Discuss the genre of ‘fantasy.’ Explain that fantasy can include things not possible in real life as well as imaginary worlds and powers. Read the book together, pausing periodically to ask questions for comprehension. Look at the map of Dragon Island at the beginning and end of the book. Study the maps with your student to see how they are the SAME and DIFFERENT from one another. Examine how the legend, compass rose, key, and scale are used. Encourage your student to use all these elements to make their own map. They can invent an entirely new fantasy world, or they can draw a map of a place with which they’re familiar.
